operation 110: day two
boston awaits.
i awoke early, and found some breakfast in the hostel with my roommates. i spoke with will and dennis about races past, and with sacha about baseball, patriots' day, and all things american. the runners' takeover of the hostel was an enjoyable environment. i checked out of the hostel, and lugged all of my crap across 4 blocks to the sheraton, where i would stay for the rest of the weekend. i briefly met my friend sarah there so that she could drop off her bags; i haven't seen her in about 3 years. we went back to the room and caught up a bit before we went off to our own afternoon plans.
i arranged to meet my friend ben and his wife rocío at quincy market for lunch. i hopped the T to gov't center, and found ben in the back of the market. this was the first time that i've seen him in about 3 years; the first time i've ever met his wife.
we grabbed lunch on the market and caught up on all sorts of things. rocío is bilingual; ben's been studying spanish for several years, same with myself--thus, about 25% of our table conversation was in spanish, which was quite enjoyable. i haven't spoke spanish in about six months; i was surprised how well i could hang. after lunch, we walked a bit of the freedom trail down towards the common and gardens. we stopped and enjoyed a bit of tradition at the paul revere graveyard... for as much as i enjoy studying other cultures, i do enjoy learning about US history. it was a lovely afternoon for a walk. with all our walking, you would have never guessed that rocío was three months pregnant.
the three of us took the T back to the pour house on boylston to meet up with sarah and our mutual friend coox, whom i haven't seen since 2000. ben, sarah, coox and myself all went to college together--the last time we were all together was in '98. ben and rocío could only stay 10 minutes; we snapped a picture and the remaining three checked in for a drink.
after 30 minutes of sox talk, sarah and i left to go to the game that night. sweet fenway! we missed only the first five pitches of what would be a dazzling evening for sox starter curt schilling in front of the sold-out crowd. there was no other place i would rather have been that night than in the oldest, smallest grandstand seats in all of baseball. the crowd was electric for all nine innings; the sox walked away with the win in the cold drizzle of a new england spring night. sarah and i took some pictures on the way out--with hoarse throats, we left happy.
we caught a cab to cambridge to see another old college classmate--keith--play in a battle-of-the-bands concert at the middle east, up in cambridge with his band, scamper. our cabby was savvy with the roads, however, we were only able to catch the final two songs of scamper's set. nonetheless, we all got to hang out, catch up, and listen to the other bands of the evening. to boot, scamper wound up winning the damn contest, moving on to the finals next week. rock on.
sarah and i retired to the hotel, catching up on all sorts of gossip. sox won, scamper won, and i've seen four old classmates (+2 spouses) that i haven't seen in years... all in a span of 12 hours.
marathon? what marathon?
