round and round

when was the last time that you rode a school bus? think long and hard... for many of us, the answer could range from years to decades. not the most comfortable things, these modes of transportation are: vinyl seats repaired with duct tape, windshield wipers moving to independent cadences, sliding windows that were nearly impossible to open.
despite the lack of creature comforts, the bus itself carries the cargo of youth: boys in the back clowining around, girls in the front gossiping about the news of the day. endless chatter, interrupted by the occassional crash of uneven pavement. try to visualize a school bus with a different context: a bus full of three-piece suits commuting to work, a bus full of retirees en route to the local resort. you can visualize it, but it just doesn't work.
the last time i rode a school bus was exactly six years ago to the month. as with every year, the boston athletic association uses hundreds of yellow coaches to transport thousands of runners 26 miles from boston common to hopkinton to ensure a safe and timely start. some might say that the choice of the school bus to complete the task is logical in light of operating costs and efficiency. i say that there simply isn't a more well-tailored option out there.
in two weeks, that bus picks me up again. and i don't even mind that it's on a school holiday.
