operation 110: day one
so, the past two days, i've had this unusual "strain" feeling on the outside of my right foot. it's been cause for concern, however, i ran three miles on it yesterday with zero problem. this morning in austin, i ran five miles on it with zero problem. i could have run a marathon this morning if i needed to. running logs don't lie: this seems like just some freak thing, and not a injury.
got bags packed and to the airport. i brought two carry-ons: one full of marathon gear, the other full of photography gear. these two bags and i sat at the gate that would take me to boston to run the marathon. felt kinda grateful for all of that, in more or less words.
the airport was teeming with children in sox gear, much to my delight. i bought a bagel from a cashier who hardly acknowledged my existence. yup, i'm back in new england, baby! i hopped the T and got to the hostel in no time. it's funny how comfortable boston feels, even if i haven't been here in six years. another visiting marathon on the T was asking me how to get around, and i felt like playing the card of "yeah, i'm a local," so i did. love the T. love it.
after settling in at the hostel, i decided to grab the camera and take pictures of boston proper. i didn't really have a destination in mind, so i just hit the street to see where i would go. i didn't want to go to fenway, knowing that i'd spend all day there tomorrow. well, within one minute i saw a family walking to the game and it hit me: "sweet jesus, go to fenway!" some things don't change.
i decided that, given it was one hour before first pitch and the streets were packed with people, that i would focus on shooting people as opposed to the environs. it was great fun. i chatted with a program peddler who talked about how sooty the canadian buses used to be years ago and how it would make street peddling a miserable gig, a music student playing sax, a sausage peddler who mentioned how there's just "more money" surrounding the environs than there was 10 years ago. all obliged to photos, some even asked to swap email addresses so they could have a copy, to which i oblidged.
photgraphing something keeps you a slight distant from getting absorbed into all of it, trying to keep an objective "what looks interesting?" perspective on your environs. tomorrow i truly visit fenway, and i can't wait.
i met my three dormmates in the hostel: will, dennis and sacha. all are here for the marathon. i wound up hitting the grocery store and having dinner with with dennis: a vancouverian in his 50s. boston 2007 pledge class: we HAVE to reserve a room-of-six at this hostel for when we come up. it would be a blast.
