oak hill flyer: changes (camp 5 of 6)

seven weeks to go, and there's a whole lot of change in the air.

  • summer finally flinched
  • may through august on the training schedule has been unique in a thank-you-sir-may-i-have-another manner that only texas can provide. you simply get used to oppression and accept it as sure as the sun rises in the east. Texas Summer was the moat which surrounded Castle Arizona; the fact that i now stand on the inner shore intact and alive is both shocking and thrilling at the same time. legs are fresher, sleeping is more sound and the mornings are simply enjoyable.

  • i finished star trek: the original series
  • every minute of the five-year mission (79 episodes in total) were watched between the hours of 5-7am twice a week since November 2009. screw extra dilithium crystals: if they would just do away with season three altogether, this little project would have been MUCH easier to tolerate. i'm now working on the movies. next week: 'the wrath of khan.' i am pumped.

  • i completed the longest bike ride of my life (let alone the schedule)
  • in retrospect, it is a little odd to fire up star trek, throw down 20 pre-dawn miles on the trainer, then roll out of your garage and not return for another 100 miles and not think much of it. the weather that weekend hadn't completely broke, so the final 60 miles were a little warm but nothing that couldn't be managed. thanks susan for being a sport and making that 60 more fun that it should have been.

  • the injury bug may have just flown into the bright blue light
  • my knee feels fine. my achilles hasn't had issue in the past two weeks. i'm rolling, stretching, icing and eating right (in seven minutes i can have a steaming bowl of quinoa and kale with paprika, cumin and sea salt ready--divine!). i've said too much already; i hear the jinx-o-copters circling around the house as i type.

  • there's new sets of wheels in the garage
  • the 120-miler was "ricky's last ride," as k would put it; a fitting last hurrah for a bike that's meant much to both k and i. in a deal with a triathlete friend in need of a four-door sedan for their child, i traded him my honda accord for his spare kestrel talon and cash. i've been tuning and fitting the bike over the past two weeks, each tune allowing the bike to ride tighter. weighing 5 lbs less than my prior bike, the kestrel flat-out zips and will be the bike i take to arizona barring the unforeseen.

i can't believe i'm still in the game. ironman arizona is feeling like a reality.
