turning 0x2328

put in a 15-miler this morning, approximately 2 months after the marathon in february. i think that this is the fastest i've ever been back at 15 after a marathon.

however, more significantly, my running log tells me that this run put me over the 9000 mile mark lifetime. given that i live in a imperical, base-10 society, that's reason to celebrate. or reason to go get my oil changed, i can't remember.

exercise for the reader: find out my next lifetime odometer milestone by playing with the following variables: [base-2/base-8/base-10/base-16] on [metric/imperical] distance.

i still remember the first run i ever went on. i remember it like yesterday. summer of '91, st. marys PA. exact date uncertain, however, this anniversary is celebrated on 18 may, for the oldest running log that i have has its first entry as 18 may 1992. dusk, 70 degrees or so. nice night. i stretched out in the sunporch of the house i grew up, not really knowing what i was doing. i remember the house being "empty;" either the family was out and about, or they were all out in the backyard, but i certainly remember feeling as if i was in my own private space. i don't really remember what stretches i did... i'm quite confident that i didn't know how to stretch at the time. i remember doing some jumping jacks in the porch to warm up. i wore a grey workout tee with a blue nike logo on the chest, my black checkerboard umbro shorts (very in vogue at the time, and were considered by myself as my "lucky soccer shorts;" they were worn in every soccer match i played), and my purple and pink brooks running shoes (oh, and don't forget the eyeglasses... i wasn't to get contact lenses for another 3 years). set out on what worked out to be a ~2.25 mile run. i started heading west on PA 120 (aka state street), out past king chevrolet, the powdered metal plants of keystone and st. marys carbon, and almost made it to whissel's ice cream and burger stand, and turned around. not much streetlight at all... once you got past the plants, you literally were on a two-lane road cutting through green hillside. twilight set in during that run; on the way back, i ran past a trailer house setup along the south side of the road where several men were out around a fire, talking and drinking. they saw me in the dim light... they began to heckle me from 200m away. i was slightly unnerved, but wasn't really worried. upon arriving back home, i was a little tired, but not completely exhausted. i remember feeling a sense of running far, like "holy crap, the only time i ever see whissel's is when the family *drives* to ridgeway, which is 10 miles away. and i saw it with my own eyes on my own two feet." i can't remember what i did after that run, but it was probably something very summertime-adolescent like, like playing nintendo or kicking a soccer ball in the backyard, but whatever it was, it was not interrupted at all by this run... i probably didn't even think much about that run the moment it ended.

and every once in a while, whissel's does still feel far away.

in talking with john l. this evening at my runner's club social, he stated: "rich, i think you're going to explode with some awesome times here in the near future. i think that with work you could completely take yourself to a new level."

an explosion is inevitable. whether that explosion is of glory or in flames is yet to be seen.
