strings and pins
when i first started running in high school, i built a simple tool that i used for years on end: i taped a map of my hometown onto 3' x 2' foamboard, stuck straight pins into all the intersections, and scored a piece of string at half-mile increments according to scale. i loved sitting down after dinner and measuring out how far i ran that evening.
mind you, this was a time before such convienences as the internet or, for that matter, driver's licenses.
as time passed, my map wore down. the paper tore. the pins would be pushed and pulled by the tension of the string, loosening their foundation. foam crumbs could be found scattered around my bedroom.
a decade-plus later, no more, thanks to gmap-pedometer.com! have a look at the "training routes" sidebar. with time, i hope to build a small library of routes i frequent. to boot, there's even altitude information! i don't even know what type of cartography joke to crack to illustrate how out-of-thought that data was back in the days of foamboard! rejoice!
