double down

back from bronchitis, i immediately embarked on a busy running weekend last weekend in an effort to jump-start the running engine again.

saturday morning started with fisher and myself driving down to san marcos for the country roads 10k, a quiet hilly run that i did very well at last year. more infamously, this was the race that i broke my finger at diving off of their diving board, which was only installed over 9 ft (!) of water. [i went back looking for an ohf article, but couldn't find any. i think i now know why--i couldn't type with my hand in a splint.] well, this year i wasn't in as good of shape, but fisher's been burning up the roads. he pulled down an age group award, and i ran my plan and pulled down a negative split on the final 2 mile hill. to boot, i won a nice pasta'n'wine door prize for the second year in a row--the RD remembed my name from last year's finger-breaking, and had a wide-open look on his face when he called my name. he was glad to see me come back, and i was happy to partake in the festivity.

the numbers:
(7:22 pace) 45:40 = 6:47, 7:16, 7:30, 7:37, 7:47, 7:21, +1:21
18th overall, 4th in age

so, in the event that that didn't gas me enough, i went back to the anderson mill triathlon--the exact same one that i did earlier this summer. i was swimming all summer long in hopes of improving my swim performance at this edition of the race, but with my parents visiting for a week and my being sick for a week, i lost a fair amount of what i gained over the months in the pool.

my swim was the exact same time as earlier this summer, but i got out with much more energy than i did the first time (despite having to wimpy side-stroke it in for the second 150m. but hey, the first 150m i had a nice form). my bike did *not* have two chain pops like last time, and my run had a nice ~:25 shave over last time. i had fun that AM, especially seeing a friend from the runners' club (jason) and folks from work (johanna, anna). the RD (jaime) was pleased to see me come back.

the numbers (300m/4mi/0.9mi):
28:17 = 8:08 (1:49) 12:32 (0:04) 5:54
4th out of ~20

so, if THAT wasn't enough, i went out sun night with eric, meghan and kauli on their boat for some fun on the lake. well, we busted out the inner tube and i told eric to tow me around HARD on that thing. i got what i asked for, and in a less-than-dramatic spill, i hit the water hard and at an odd angle, and strained the inside of my left leg (knee, groin). bah. i know that my body's weak after running, and should have known that it was no time for horseplay. that was 3 nights ago, and every night i have seen linear progress in the injury. i was able to do the elliptical for 30:00 today at reasonable pace, so i'm optimistic that things will be back to normal soon. i'd much rather be running right now... work's been busy and stressful, and i would like that release in the morning.

a post to ohf would not be complete without a note about last week's philadelphia distance run. she steals my heart in athens, now this: US distance darling deena kastor smashes the 21-year-old US half-marathon record with a 1:07:53. she's red hot and heading to chicago... go deena go!
