new mountain
i keep my bottles clean and dry
i use them almost every day
bibs i saved from weekends past
pinned and pressed and tucked away
meals are made the night before
tomorrow's traffic will not wait
laces tied, an extra tug
ensures safe landings with my gait
i like to think i am well-trained,
that there's no summit i can't touch
but bottles, bibs, meals and laces
prep you only for so much
for all the summits i have climbed
i find myself but at a base
this new mountain, made from love
ten fingers, toes, a tender face
with great news, a hint of fear
even for this distance heart
but time and time, the greatest joys
are reaped by those who sow the start
and come first morning, waking up
with our new daughter or our son,
sans words those eyes will speak to me:
"mind not the race; enjoy the run"
i use them almost every day
bibs i saved from weekends past
pinned and pressed and tucked away
meals are made the night before
tomorrow's traffic will not wait
laces tied, an extra tug
ensures safe landings with my gait
i like to think i am well-trained,
that there's no summit i can't touch
but bottles, bibs, meals and laces
prep you only for so much
for all the summits i have climbed
i find myself but at a base
this new mountain, made from love
ten fingers, toes, a tender face
with great news, a hint of fear

but time and time, the greatest joys
