oak hill flyer: scott
my favorite memory of scott is from the decker challenge, perhaps five or six years ago. it was frightfully windy and cold (i know--what decker wasn't without terrible weather?).
i was two or three miles into the race, about to turn onto lindell at the railroad tracks. the turn onto lindell is where the fun begins: only the runners and the occasional cow ever see what happens on those back roads, away from decker itself.
i happened to be running with the second place female at the time, a gal who very much looked the part: short pigtails, midriff, black hat and black gloves in the 35-degree air. she meant business, and her sights were on the first female fifty yards ahead.
the two of us were accompanied by scott birk. one of a kind he was; how many other 6'4", 200+lb men do you know who can lay claim to a 2:47 marathon? as we faced the 15+mph headwind, the second female, all 5'4" of her, was pressed right up against the backside of scott, letting him cut the wind. the juxtaposition of height and absence of any warm clothes was just a funny sight to see. it was all i could do to not laugh at this odd couple running in tandem.
you left the trail better than you found it
you left the trail far too soon
perhaps on our next run, you will be in front
and the wind will be no more
in memoriam, scott michael birk
