oak hill flyer: new boston qualifications
The Boston Athletic Association recently announced new qualification standards for Boston Marathon 2012 and beyond. Clearly reacting to the registration avalanche of 2011, these changes are nothing short of brilliant.
They don't discriminate. Changes are across the board for men and women, young and old.
They raise the bar. The Boston has always been about prestige; raising the bar helps maintain this level of excellence.
They made multiple bars. Is hitting your BQ a walk in the park for you? How about 5 or 10 minutes faster? Now there's incentive to drop your time even further. That's exciting.
They don't capitalize. The BAA could have turned the Boston into a two-day circus and shoved in as many runners as they could onto MA135; they didn't. There was no mention of entry fees in the press release; I'll be curious to see if they jack the price of admission up.
Thanks BAA for setting the standard of excellence--for both runners and marathons.
