oak hill flyer: buda 10m race report
of the races we run, many are of our own accord. other races are ones we don't actually learn about until well after we have engaged in competition. it is these races where we learn the most about ourselves:
- if the entire county was watching me right now, should i care?
- if i fall behind the pack, should i continue to press forward?
- why am i trapped in a box of plywood, and why does the back corner of it smell so interesting?
BUDA WIENER DOG RACES 2011: THIS IS NO PETTING ZOO
with 2010's personal best a fading memory, team fargo wanted to raise the bar in the 2011 edition of the famous buda wiener dog races. after months of following a strict regiment of walks and a focused diet recommended by his personal doctor, fargo felt primed heading into the inaugural afternoon of may. always looking to gain an edge on the competition, he requested his trainer/handler groom him short the day prior to the event.
his trainer/handler wholeheartedly approved of such a pre-race request.
fast forward race-day: we register for a heat starting in 15 minutes. in years past, a post-race trip to the fair's petting zoo was in order, which always left fargo abuzz with energy and excitement. this year, his handlers elected to take him to the petting zoo prior to the race, in hopes of engaging his primal instincts in time for the starter's gun.
fargo's favorite bunnies were nesting in an inaccessible portion of the pen. giant turtles didn't exactly catch fargo's attention in their absence.
to the start line: check-in, tie your race collar on and enter the start chute. with k on video duties, i walk around to find fargo steady at attention on the other side of the gate. could lane two (second from left) be the fast track to this afternoon's quarterfinals?
if lane two was the track to the quarterfinals, we would never know.
we all know of fargo not being the fastest out of the gate, and we all know of buda's controversial policies regarding the absence of age groups (fargo turns fifteen next month). thus, it was no surprise to see our hero fall behind early. nor was it a surprise to see him be distracted by blades of grass and other entities sticking perpendicular out of the ground (that's never been a function of age really; it's always been that way). BUT WHAT OF CORNELIUS HORAN'S DACHSHUND WHO ATTEMPTS TO INTERFERE WITH FARGO'S RACE AT THE 4m MARK? how could any dachshund keep their composure in the presence of such a threat to sport and spirit? HOW COULD ANY DACHSHUND CONTINUE TO PRESS ON AMONGST THE CHAOS? continue, fargo did.
amidst the melee, race officiants clearly concerned for fargo's safety removed him from the course with but 2m to go. the results of the day may say DNF, but by our records, that's a Did Not Falter for our Dachshund Named Fargo.
congratulations pal; your pierre de coubertin is surely in the mail.
[forget what the children's story tells you: next year, we really need to visit the rabbits, NOT the giant turtle, for inspiration]
with love from buda--r, k and fargo
