new watch
exhausted, i staggered and dropped to my knees. hard limestone had never felt so comforting. held up only by water i panted, gasped, covered my eyes. i wasn't moving anytime soon.
"hey... hey there. you okay there, son?" the middle aged-man asked, wading in my direction.
i noticed his white beard, his height. my head was too blurry for other details. "oh yeah," i replied. "oh yeah... that, that was a... mile pr."
"oh wow! hey, give me a high-five!" he held his hand out high.
despite my state, you better believe i had enough energy to hit him back. it's good to have a witness.

for the past four months, i have been swimming without a watch. my swim watch had a mechanical failure last winter; i guess i was pressing the lap button too many times. cheap, but not discouraged, i figured it would be good to just continue swimming and see what happens.
i recently replaced my watch, finding a good deal coupled with a gift certificate. over the past two weeks, it has felt as if there's been something wrong with this watch: it seems slow. i double-checked the watch with other timepieces over the next few days; sure enough, there was nothing wrong with the watch at all. my untimed swims were paying off, and i suspected a big day was coming around the corner.
this morning i set a new open water mile PR by almost 1.5 minutes. each length of the springs got more and more delicious, with the last length being all-out madness. the water felt so smooth; the dam wall kept coming faster and faster. my head has been spinning all day from dehydration. tonight, i sleep happy.
