want v need

upon leaving today's company meeting where i worked, a good friend of mine asked me if i wanted a ride to my car, knowing from earlier that day that i parked about a mile from the concert hall where our meeting was located at. being the good-natured person that he is, he asked me if i wanted a ride over to my car.

i replied: "no thanks, i need the exercise."

this reply was certainly in jest to both ourselves and any casual observer--i stand 6'1" with a runner's twiggy frame, my friend stands at about the same height but has about 75 lbs on me... he's just a healthy big dude. we both got a laugh out of my statement.

we parted, and i thought about what i said: i need the exercise. when said with one intonation, that statement couldn't be farther from the truth. i run regularly, watch what i eat, basically treat myself like any marathoner would treat themselves. i'm just about the last person that needs to walk to my car.

but say the sentence with another intonation--i need the exercise--and the statement couldn't be closer to the truth. i need my body in motion the way the morning needs the sun. when you adopt running as a part of your lifestyle, you just wouldn't be the same person without it, just in the same fashing that you adopt other facets of your life: career, family, friends. in times of stress on the job, you continue to go to work until the problem is solved. in times of turmoil or loss, you stand by your kin and see them through. when it's 45 degrees with a steady rain on a sunday morning, you still log your two hour run.

this could carry on for quite the while longer, discussing the boundaries between choice and commitment, want v need, but i'll pull the plug for now.

did i need the exercise? maybe there was less jest in that statement than i originally thought.
