heartbreak
i took a fall back in january. three months later, i finally--hopefully--have hit the ground.
boston was in the cards at the turn of the new year. with the onset of a knee injury, the bullet-proof training plan morphed into a period of possessed-turned-desperate cross-training. with the MRI review confirming cartilage damage requiring 4 more months, i began to discover was i was really made of.
i sank into a deep depression, dwelling over what could have been. just being on town lake or seeing a runner on the street would bring me to the verge of tears. the swimming pool appeared as a pathetic consolation prize for the winter's efforts. the inability to stand up without knee pain rendered me unable to forget about it all as i went about my day. nightmares were common. i ate lots of chocolate.
i didn't want to talk or write about any of it, for fear of having to confront the notion of learning that my "running is just a hobby" mantra was a flat-out lie. of having to live without running.
well, here we are: we're writing. and we're learning. it's a first step.
i've been sedentary for 3+ weeks now, and my knee feels great. granted, i've put on seven pounds and lost all athletic capacity, but i felt it was necessary--i just couldn't go on at that level of intensity while being handcuffed to the radiator at the same time. i'm beginning to appreciate what it means to have good all-around health. perhaps now i can rebuild the house from the ground up with this knowledge.

i just returned from a week in new york city and boston. i took in three baseball games, the trials, cheering on runners in newton, and spent lots of time with k and other friends. and i walked an average of six miles a day with no knee problems.
i could write a lot more about the trip, but for now i'll just share my photos from boston. it was wonderful, go figure: i don't think i could have enjoyed it as much as i did if i would have been running.
now that i'm back in austin, i think i'll go for a walk tomorrow morning and see if i can keep this ball rolling. congratulations to all boston and olympic trials athletes from this weekend: you were all fantastic.
