the quarries

on 1 oct 06, after the twin cities marathon, i hung up running for a while and started to really pursue swimming. being almost exactly one year from the day, just how far have i come?

i've come far enough to be nipped by a septegenarian at the finish line of an open water mile to take home the coveted DFL crown.

[...]

did you read what i read? that's right: open water mile. 47 minutes and 47 seconds of well-paced, well-spotted swimming. i had two calf cramps i had to pull up for in the middle of the swim, but they were managed well.

i enjoyed swimming alongside the bank, being able to watch tree branches brush past my elbow as i took breaths. i enjoyed the smell of plastic in the water as you approached the 8-foot buoys which marked every turn. i enjoyed knowing it was in the bag with 400m to go.

yeah, i'm now the antagonist of a story that i'm sure francis will tell for years to come--how he saw this young buck within his reach and caught him at the line--but i couldn't care less. one year ago, i wouldn't have given thought to even trying out for the part.

How do you smell in the water? Or is that the same as drowning?

dude, drowning is s-o-o-o 2005.
