injured
as i sat on the side of my bed monday morning--in the darkness, way too early--i should have seen the sign. for that matter, i should have seen the sign in the broad afternoon daylight just twelve hours prior. the back of my right leg felt like it was beaten with a baseball bat: tender to touch, reluctant to move. with near-childish hope, i packed my gymbag and went the track.
i stretched and i double-stretched as the mosquitos provided no comfort to the already tense day. and then i began my warmup run.
it ended just 800m from where it started. my right leg had no extension; my right hamstring was in a great deal of pain. despite rigorous planning and steadfast preparation, an injury has been suffered upon me.

i was active and bookish in my childhood, to say the least. for the majority of my youth, one could almost say that i enjoyed school. i liked most of my classes, had a small circle of friends, and always looked forward to after-school athletic practices. on occassion, however, you would wake up on a white winter morning to hear certain sweet words broadcasting from bedroom radio:
"...ridgway, johnsonburg, and st. marys area school districts are closed for the day..."
sweet jesus, yes! a snow day! for reasons we have absolutely no control over, our regimented life was transformed into mornings of warm breakfasts and game shows. looking forward to basketball practice that night? seeing your friends at lunch? tough. your life was not as you knew it, and you didn't want it any other way.

a snow day. in texas. in august. improbable as it sounds, that's how i'm trying to view this entire hamstring issue. not sure how much i could have done about it then; not much i can do about it now. might as well enjoy the time off.
in reality, it has healed rapidly in the past 48 hours and i fully expect to be in position for a scheduled 20-miler this weekend. i can't say that i've lost my head over it too much. however, i do feel very subdued and very moody; no doubt a side-effect of the inactivity.
"relax, sleep in a bit," i tell myself. "it's just a snow day."
[granted, a snow day caused by my staying up all night in my pajamas watering down the wintery streets with a garden hose, but never you mind that. what's done is done, and none of us are going anywhere. sit down, watch some tv, and have some french toast.]
