culpepper at freescale
john conley, director of the austin freescale marathon, landed US distance phenom alan culpepper to compete in the freescale half marathon in 2006. culpepper won the 2004 us olympic marathon trials two years ago with a time of 2:11:40, in some of the toughest and most unusual winter conditions the marathon trials have ever seen (34°F with 16-21mph winds in montgomery, AL). his debut marathon time, 2:09:41 (chicago 2002), tied with alberto salazar for fastest US marathon debut in history. more recently, culpepper placed 4th in the 2005 boston marathon (2:13:39), the highest US placing at boston since Dave Gordon was fourth in 1987 in almost the same time.
a native texan, culpepper is easily the biggest running name to compete in the history of motorola/freescale. this is a giant step for the race itself and the city of austin as a running community. why run? here's a damn fine reason why: if you're running in either freescale event next month, you're literally toeing the same line that one of the best US marathoners in the country today will be. just fantastic.
