austin marathon: 1999, 2005




1999: set marathon PR with a 3:08:40 showing. 2005: broke marathon PR with a 3:06:16 showing.

given that the integral (i.e. finish time) of both of these curves are about the same, note the conservation of area under the curve: those sub-6:40 miles in the early stages of 1999 translated into 8-minute-miles late in the game. the std. deviation of 2005 is significantly less than 1999 as well, alloting for the last mile of 2005 to be the 5th fastest mile of the marathon, as opposed to the slowest mile (1999).

what does it really translate to? it's the difference between watching your friends cross the finish line and staring at the ceiling of the medical tent.

[note that the two spikes in the 2005 plot (mile 6, 12) are miles that involved a 15-20 second restroom break.]

Cool graphs. I must admit I've been doing some data mining myself in these recovery days. Got an Excel question for you. How did you format your data? Whenever I import a cell like "7:30" and tell Excel to treat it as a time, it wants to make it "7:30 AM", which is all well and good, except I can't control the y-axis anymore. Guess you didn't plan on doing tech support for MS on your blog, but oh well. LMK if you've solved this issue.

i know what you're talking about, tim. i hacked around this by typing my times in notepad (e.g. "7:00\n7:10\n7:15"), copying all of notepad's contents, and then pasting it into excel. excel seemed to digest the data correctly that way, however, i couldn't edit the data once in excel--if i edited a pasted cell, it would flip to "7:15 AM" and it'd be all screwy. HTH.
